Ocular Surface Diseases

Dry eye is a common eye complaint, affecting as many as 15% of adults over the age of 65. Dry eye may be a chronic irritation, a postoperative complication following refractive or other eye surgeries or a complicating factor in other eye diseases. The most widely used methods to diagnose dry eye are not sensitive enough to detect the condition in many patients. Current treatment options are applied indiscriminately, often without a rational basis for selecting one of various options.

The Ocular Surface Disease Center is an advanced diagnostic laboratory using the best available testing methods in a panel approach. Our practice has developed a database of information on ocular surface disease patients, including risk factor analysis and treatment outcomes. This consultative service provides an opportunity to focus attention on dry eye patients and direct their energies to more effective management of their dry eye disease.

The Ocular Surface Disease Center offers:

  • Comprehensive consultation, performed over two office visits on separate days
  • Improved risk assessment of patients planning refractive surgery procedures
  • Improved diagnostic abilities for evaluation of ocular irritation complaints
  • Advanced testing to identify the layer of tear film disorder:
    • Fluorescein Clearance Testing
    • Kinetic Analysis of Tear Interference Images
    • Tear Evaporation rate
    • Differential Vital Dye Staining
    • Meibomian Gland Analysis
    • Impression Cytology
  • Improved standardization of ocular surface evaluation methods
  • Alternative management strategy for post-surgical dry eye problems
  • Full treatment option discussion, including nutritional supplementation.
