Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy is another excellent procedure, which was the first vision correction surgery to use the excimer laser, the same laser used for LASIK surgery. PRK has stood the test of time as a safe and effective method.

With PRK, no corneal flap is needed. The thin outer skin layer of the cornea is removed and a customized laser treatment is applied to the surface. The skin layer regenerates itself over a few days. There can be more discomfort and a longer recovery period with PRK compared to LASIK surgery. However, some patients are not good candidates for LASIK, and PRK may be the safer option. Visual results are equivalent between LASIK and PRK surgery.

If you have been told in the past that you are not a good candidate for LASIK, call to setup a free refractive evaluation at our Overland Park office. PRK may be a great option for you.
